The project began in 2013 when all existing burial registers were scanned and then indexed, resulting in a database of 69,000 burial records. All of these entries, along with information about graveyards, photographs and maps, were placed on the Buried in Fingal website to create a complete database of information on all graveyards in Fingal.

In 2026, work began on an update for the Buried in Fingal website, comprising improved transcriptions, enhanced search functions, the ability to see additional burials in a plot and a new design.

Fingal Local Studies & Archives would like to acknowledge the involvement of Kaelleon Design in both the original and updated projects. Thanks are also given to those who gave permission to use their photographs of Fingal’s historic graveyards, namely Brian Kavanagh, Christine Baker, Barry Stanley and Mark Broderick.

Additionally, the information about each burial ground was taken from the Fingal Historic Graveyards Project which was commissioned by the Fingal Heritage Office in 2008. Each burial ground entry also gives a list of further resources, generally comprising headstone transcriptions such as those in The Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland and Dr Michael J.S. Egan’s Memorials of the Dead: Dublin City and County. Both of these works are available from Fingal Local Studies & Archives.
